The apulian pumo and the good omen of a restart!
An emblem of Apulian craftsmanship, in past centuries the pumo was used for decorative purposes by wealthy Apulian families to adorn the balcony railings, the handrails of stairways, or it was placed in the open galleries of the noble palaces, sometimes personalizing it with heraldic elements. That ceramic object, handmade on the wheel, was inspired by the Roman goddess Pomona, patron deity of the vine, olive and fruit trees, the same term “pumo” derives from the Latin pomum which means fruit. Its shape recalls the fruit ripening or the blossoming of flowers, it represents a closed bud between four acanthus leaves that is about to open, and it symbolizes the ability to regenerate, fertility and wealth. According to the popular Apulian tradition, the pumo also had an apotropaic function, it was used to ward off evil spirits, as a lucky charm.
From May 10th we reopen the doors to the 2021 tourist season, with the wish that the new Pumi of Driade dei Trulli really bring happiness and a little luck after the “great winter” of the tourism industry. We look forward to amazing and exciting again tourists from all over the world, in the welcoming Capital of Trulli. Ready…steady…Go!
